The Trounce - The Bears beat the Redskins, 73-0

The 1940 NFL Championship game to date has become one of the strangest games in the National Football League's history. The Washington Redskins finished the regular season 9-2 and became the NFL Eastern Division champs. The Chicago Bears finished the regular season 8-3 and became Western Division champs in 1940. Less than a month prior to this game the Redskins beat the Bears 7-3 in a defensive battle.

On this day, Chicago rushed for 381 yards, completed 7 of 10 passes for 138 yards and intercepted 8 passes (3 returned for touchdowns). Only 12 balls were alloted for the game and with each extra point try, another ball went free to a spectator. Therefore the Bears were informed by the referees that they were going to have to run or pass for the conversion attempt.

The Bears head coach George Halas refined his "T" formation for this game and it proved to be unstoppable. Before the game the Redskins owner called the Bears "crybabies" and the crowd chanted, "Who's afraid of the Bears?" An indication of the score indicates the Bears obviously had the "last laugh".
