Tex Schramm

Tex Schramm
Team Administrator
General Manager / President

1947-57 Los Angeles Rams, 1960-90 Dallas Cowboys

Texas E. Schramm graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Texas in 1947. His father, a Los Angeles stockbroker, helped him land the job of publicity director for the Cleveland Rams. The Rams became successful and won the NFL Championship in 1951. Schramm was then General Manager. Six years later, he left the Rams to work for CBS television in New York as an assistant to Bill MacPhail, the network's Vice President of sports. Dallas Cowboy owner Clint Murchison hired Schramm as General Manager of the newly founded franchise in Dallas. Schramm was a marketing genius. Schramm was instrumental in designing the famed "computer evaluation" system. When he hired an IBM statistical expert to devise a computerized rating system, it revolutionized pro football scouting and drafting. In 1967, Schramm became President of the Cowboys, and his stock options made him part owner and a wealthy man. He was instrumental in working with NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle on the merger in 1970 between the NFL and AFL. In March of 1984, "Bum" Bright bought the Cowboys and kept Tex as President and General Manager. He left the organization in 1989, less than two months after Tom Landry was fired as Cowboys Head Coach by then owner Jerry Jones. Schramm's biography was authorized, and eventually published in 1988 by Bob St. John.
