1963-77 St Louis Cardinals, 1978 Dallas Cowboys

In his fifteen years with the St Louis Cardinals, Jackie Smith proved himself to be one of the greatest tight ends in the history of the NFL. He caught 480 passes for a 16.5 yard average. He retired after the 1977 season with a serious neck injury. But when Jay Saldi was injured for 4 games the following season, he was enticed out of retirement by Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys. At 37, Smith backed up Cowboys tight end Billy Jo Dupree, but didn't see much action in the 1978 regular season. Although he did have three receptions and a TD catch in a clutch come from behind victory over Atlanta in the playoffs. Jackie originally played in 2 post season games with St Louis, and earned 5 straight Pro Bowl invitations with the Cardinals and was named All-Pro five times from 1966-70. He finished his career having played in 210 regular season games, compiling 7,918 receiving yards and catching 40 touchdown passes.

Dallas Cowboys: Authorized Pictorial History by Jeff Guinn
Dallas Cowboys Pictorial History Dallas Cowboys: The Authorized Pictorial History is exactly what its title suggests. For the first time ever, a book has been written with the full cooperation of the Cowboys organization. Tex Schramm tells how he and Clint Murchison worked behind the scenes to convince the NFL owners that they should place a franchise in Dallas. Schramm explains why he wanted Tom Landry as the Cowboys first head coach. Roger Staubach and Drew Pearson combine to tell what really happened on both ends of the famous Hail Mary pass. A season by season account of Cowboys history is also included along with an in-depth section devoted exclusively to team statistics. Enclosed are the finest (enhanced) Cowboy photos ever presented, including some that haven't been featured anywhere in decades. The Authorized History is the ultimate book that captures all the excitement and excellence of "America's Team".

Note: Jeff Guinn is associate books editor of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
